Labor’s Vicki Ward, who has held the seat of Eltham for four years, was elected in 2014 with a 1.9 per cent swing. Though previously Liberal leaning in the 1990s, today Eltham is a key marginal seat and is held by 2.7 per cent. It was previously held by Labor’s Steve Herbert from 2002 to 2014.

Eltham is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 20 km north-east of Melbourne’s Central Business District. Its local government area is the Shire of Nillumbik. At the 2016 Census, Eltham had a population of 18,314.

Eltham is one of the ‘green wedge’ areas that provide relatively undeveloped, accessible environments within the Melbourne suburban region. However, the character of the suburb is changing rapidly, with increased road traffic and higher-density housing becoming more common.
