Student journalists look to brighter future in their industry

Student journalism is a core part of the Australian journalism landscape, shaping and teaching the journalists of tomorrow. But through 2020 and what there has been of 2021, student journalists have faced many new challenges.

Covid-19 meant many were learning the tricks of the trade remotely – tricks that students are scared they may never get to use with news outlets getting shut down during lockdowns.

As if this weren’t enough, they have also had to contend with the recent war between Facebook and Google and the Australian government in regard to the news media bargaining code.

Gianni Francis, a third-year journalism student at La Trobe University, discussed how he feels about being a student journalist at this worrying time for the industry with Brittany Carlson.
