Michael Bachelard is a former investigations editor at The Age. Kate Geraghty is Australia’s most experienced and talented war photographer. My interviews with them on Democracy’s Watchdogs’ site are in two parts: first, Michael talks about his role as investigations editor and how he deals with reporters and stories; in the second half, Michael and Kate recount their award-winning coverage of the aftermath of ISIS’s occupation of Mosul in northern Iraq and also the Australian women left stranded in Syria following ISIS’s defeat. What really comes home hard to me at least is the empathy they have for people in the most dire circumstances.
