It all started with a quiet calling and a leap of faith. For Imanuel and Santi Talan, dedicating their lives to caring for people with mental disorders was never part of the plan—until it became their mission.
On June 6, 2010, Yayasan Kemah Peduli Sahabat Kasih was founded by Imanuel Talan after years of heartfelt prayers, seeking divine guidance to serve people living with mental disorders in Tangerang, Indonesia. Originally from Kupang, his journey started back in 2002 when he and his wife, Santi, began helping one or two patients at a time.
It was Santi who first felt called to serve those with mental illness—many of them taken off the streets or entrusted to her by desperate families. “We prayed and struggled for God’s direction, asking when and where the right time was to start this mission,” said Imanuel.
Without any prior experience in social work, Imanuel admitted that it took eight years of continuous prayer to prepare his heart and soul for the decision to dedicate his life to this cause. “I was focused on working to support my family, while my wife devoted herself to prayer and caring for them,” he explained.
Imanuel worked tirelessly to provide for his family of six—his wife, Santi, and their four daughters—while also caring for several individuals with mental disorders who had become part of their extended family. At one point, they were caring for 11 patients at home, relying solely on his income to cover the household’s needs. Despite the modest salary, the couple managed to support not only their family but also the “children of the King,” as they lovingly referred to their patients.
The foundation encourages patients to regain their independence by involving them in daily activities. Under the supervision of the caretakers, they participate in tasks like gardening, washing clothes, sweeping, and tending livestock. These small but meaningful routines help them develop skills, confidence, and a sense of purpose.
It’s a journey built on faith, compassion, and resilience—proof that dedication and love can transform lives, one small step at a time.
