Outraged residents say living near Karrinyup Shopping Centre is “hell” and describe the traffic and changes to the area as “dramatic”.

Davenport Street resident Valerie Severn says that she is shocked by the number of people that drive up along the footpath, including furniture and delivery trucks, or even food delivery cars who park across their driveways some days.

“I’m shocked at the lack of consideration for people who are in wheelchairs or kids in prams…they just drive straight up onto the footpath,” Ms Severn says.

During a council meeting on Tuesday night, the City of Stirling put forward a long list of recommendations in hopes to remedy this issue for residents, with one of the main outcomes being to apply for the government Black Spot Program grant.

This follows a road safety review of the area, that was recommended by the council and completed early this month.

The review showed that in the area of main concern, the traffic volume had almost quadrupled and there had been a total of 20 crashes between 2020 and 2024.

Raised plateaus and a crosswalk are a major part of the concept plan put forward to council, which experts say will decrease travel speeds, improve reaction times and assist drivers entering and exiting the centre via Davenport Street.

Local residents say they have been highlighting safety concerns to the City of Stirling since the shopping centre upgrades and apartment buildings were approved back in 2015.

“Sometimes we’ve resorted to walking onto the edge of the road and putting our hands up [to] stop the cars to let out our visitors out,” Ms Severn said.

“We’re in our 80’s so it’s not really flash having to do stuff like that.”

An estimated $363,000 is needed to fulfil all the recommendations highlighted in the council’s concept plans revealed in their meeting on Tuesday night, which they are hoping to fully fund through the Black Spot Program grant.

Applications for the program grant open in July this year where the council will apply in hopes to draft into their 2026/2027 budget if successful.
