West Java is known as the province with the second highest number of schools in Indonesia. However, this number does not yet reflect an even quality of education.
In reality, teachers and students of SMPN 04 Cibitung in Sukabumi still have to use a worn-out, leaking boat to get to school.
One school in Bogor also faces similarly concerning conditions. For instance, SDN Kadusewu’s Remote Class has a building in such poor condition that it endangers both teachers and students who are pursuing their education.
Both schools share the same core issues: difficult access and the fact that many teachers are honorary staff whose welfare is far from adequate. According to the 2024 IDEAS survey on teacher welfare in Indonesia, 74% of honorary teachers still earn less than 2 million rupiah per month. This figure is far from sufficient, considering the lowest Provincial Minimum Wage (UMP) in Indonesia is already around 2 million rupiah.
The Pilar Pengabdian team consists of three students from Universitas Multimedia Nusantara, Muhammad Daffa Abyan, Ryan Richardo, and Muhammad Rafli, who share the determination to voice the rights of honorary teachers in West Java. This documentary has also been featured on KompasTV’s official YouTube channel, reaching a wider audience and bringing greater attention to the struggles faced by these educators
