Last summer’s bushfires are estimated to have killed or displaced one billion animals.

Wildlife carers say the ecological disaster just added to acts of animal cruelty and Australia’s indifference to preserving habitats.

They believe all those factors combined are sending some native species towards extinction.

Jana Black has been speaking with workers on the frontline who hope Australians now realise that we have a lot to lose.
