Congratulations to UTS student Jonathan Weitz-Freeman who wins this year’s Democracy’s Watchdogs’ award for investigative reporting. Jonathan saw a story that some of us may overlook: cages of chickens for sale at a weekend market. Many would assume that buyers may want eggs or pets. Jonathan’s story, using scrolling video, great photos and perfect wording shows that many of the chooks are taken home and have their throats cut. There are religious beliefs and practices for that. But there is a lack of oversight and regulation covering the home slaughter of farm animals. This was a story presented in an engaging way that was in the public interest. Well done.
Selecting a winner wasn’t an easy decision for the judges – it hardly ever is – because all the finalists presented really good in-depth stories. Check them out. Well done to all the finalists. Jonathan will receive $1000 and a trophy and the finalists will be given highly commended certificates.
If you missed out this year and will still be at uni in 2024, please give it another shot. We’ll be running again. If you entered and would like some personal feedback on your story, please email me: [email protected]
Regards,
Bill
