Peter Morgan, the Greens Candidate for Oakleigh is currently a teacher. He moved to Melbourne twenty years ago and lives in Hughesdale.

Mr Morgan has been associated with The Australian Greens since 2016. Prior to this, he did not have any political experience. He has worked with numerous nonprofit organisations supporting climate change groups and protecting the environment

Mr Morgan became an active supporter of GetUp! when the activist group started. GetUp! is a lobby group seeking to influence public policy in a progressive direction focusing on environmental justice, fairness and democratic Integrity.

Mr Morgan handed out ‘how to vote cards’ sponsored by GetUp! in 2013, which made him interested in a political career. Initially Mr Morgan was involved in a bipartisan climate change group for teachers around 2010. However, as time went on the bipartisan approach made less sense as he saw the environmental issues around him.

Around 2013, Mr Morgan heard the national Greens leader, Richard Di Natale, speak. He was influenced by his comments mainly on the issue of drugs. Mr Di Natale said that this is a health issue and not a law and order one.

“What pushed me over the edge was when people called him a whacky doctor and I said no, the evidence stacks up”, said Mr Morgan.

“The war on drugs is lost, it costs lives, it costs billions of dollars and it’s time to step up and have a mature conversation”, he said.

Mr. Morgan wants to further inject into Victorian politics the four pillars that sit at the core of the Greens’ program . These are transparency, peace, protecting the ecosystem and social justice.

The candidate points out that his campaign include minority groups in Oakleigh. He wants his campaign to be for everybody. “You have to be fair to people now and in the future, without that you don’t have sustainability”, he said.

His future goal will be facilitating greater inclusion of minority groups in policy making based on the diversity that modern-day Australia has to offer.

“A well-run society needs to take into account diversity and encourage it”, he said.

Mr Morgan also wants to create a well-integrated public transport network as he believes it is the future.

“We have a public transport plan, we believe that building more roads only gets more traffic. The public transportation plan is a core part of business and integrated systems will benefit everyone”, he said.

Overall, he thinks the skyrail project, eliminating train level crossings in the electorate, is a success. “The main issue is that the Labor party refuses to release the business cases citing public confidence as they develop private- public partnerships”, he said.

According to Mr Morgan, the lack of transparency explains why there has been some opposition to skyrail in Oakleigh. There was not enough community consultation during the process. “…it was this is the skyrail and these are the things underneath it; and frankly this is why people are so annoyed”, he said.

Mr. Morgan believes that the Greens are the only party that connect the dots between the economy, environment and equality. According to the Greens candidate for Oakleigh, these policies meaningfully address the complexity of modern times, which is needed to deal with the challenges ahead.
