Plastic Footprint: Legacy of Civilization, Environmental Threat is a 42-minute documentary that explores how plastic, once celebrated for its practicality and affordability, has become one of the most pressing environmental threats of our time. In Indonesia, the scale of the problem is severe, with 5.4 million tons of plastic waste generated annually, accounting for 14% of the country’s total household waste.
The film highlights the use of plastic in everyday life, from food packaging to household items, while showcasing the resulting pollution and the persistence of microplastics. Interviews with Rafika Aprilianti at Ecoton Laboratory reveal the presence of microplastics in fish, posing risks such as hormonal disruption and cancer.
The documentary critically evaluates Indonesia’s regulatory framework, including Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 75/2019, which targets a 70% reduction in marine plastic waste by 2025, and Jakarta Gubernatorial Regulation No. 142/2019, banning plastic bags in retail. However, compliance is low, with only 18 of 42 producers adhering to reduction plans, and field observations from traditional markets and supermarkets show continued use of plastic bags despite the bans.
Amid these challenges, the film highlights hope through community initiatives like Bank Sampah Suka Maju. As a local waste bank, this initiative encourages residents to regularly bring their plastic waste for collection, sorting, and recycling. Beyond waste management, its founder, Toni, actively conducts outreach and awareness programs, teaching households how their small actions can collectively reduce environmental impact.
This documentary serves as both an educational resource and a call to action. It aims to inspire viewers to reflect on their personal consumption patterns and encourage collective responsibility in tackling plastic pollution. Ultimately, the film aspires to shift public awareness toward sustainable practices and spark dialogue on how humanity can reduce its plastic footprint for the sake of future generations.
